French School, circa 1790–1825.

Oil on copper, each approximately 20 x 15 cm (8 x 6 in.)

A charming and finely executed pair of cabinet paintings depicting mythological and allegorical subjects inspired by the French Rococo tradition. One composition represents Venus attended by Cupid and playful putti within an idyllic landscape, while the companion painting depicts a pastoral waterside scene with a young female figure and two bathing figures.

Executed in oil on copper, the paintings display the refined surface quality and luminous color effects characteristic of the medium. The compositions reveal the enduring influence of François Boucher and the late Rococo aesthetic, with delicately modeled figures, soft atmospheric landscapes, and a graceful decorative sensibility.

The copper supports exhibit consistent age-related oxidation on the reverse, while the painted surfaces retain an attractive and naturally developed craquelure indicative of age. The works are housed in later 19th-century giltwood frames of richly ornamented Rococo Revival design.

These paintings belong to the tradition of small-scale cabinet pictures produced for collectors and connoisseurs during the transitional period between the late Rococo and the early Neoclassical era. Their decorative appeal, quality of execution, and preservation make them an attractive and highly displayable pair for collectors of European Old Master and period decorative arts.

Condition: Minor surface wear and age-appropriate craquelure. Frames with expected wear, small losses, and restorations consistent with age.

Provenance: Private Collection, Europe.
