18th Century French Louis XVI Carved Walnut Secretary Desk

18th Century French Louis XVI Carved Walnut Secretary Desk

coming soon

An elegant 18th-century French Louis XVI secrétaire à pente, masterfully handcrafted from richly figured walnut and beautifully decorated with delicate carving throughout.

The slant-front writing surface opens to reveal a meticulously organized interior fitted with fifteen small drawers, creating an exceptional workspace originally designed for correspondence, documents, and personal valuables. Beneath the writing compartment are three generous drawers, offering substantial additional storage while maintaining perfectly balanced neoclassical proportions.

The secretary is adorned with refined floral wood carving, highlighted by an elegant basket-of-flowers motif on the writing flap and graceful geometric strings framing each drawer. Restrained brass hardware and the clean architectural lines are characteristic of the sophisticated Louis XVI aesthetic, which replaced the exuberance of Rococo with symmetry and classical elegance.

Pieces such as this were crafted for distinguished French homes where they served as both functional writing furniture and symbols of education and refinement. The beautifully figured walnut has acquired a deep, warm patina over more than two centuries, emphasizing its age and history.
