Antique Flemish Baroque mirror w/ ornate metal frame

This extraordinary wall mirror dates from the 18th century and exemplifies the typical Baroque style of that period. The richly ornamented frame is made of pressed and finely patinated brass. On the back is an open panel — a feature often interpreted as a hidden compartment. The mirror thus reflects not only the artistic craftsmanship of its era but also the legends surrounding so-called “Bible mirrors”, which are said to have been used as secret hiding places for the bible in Protestant Netherlands.
